What is Band Steering?

Band Steering is a feature that encourages dual-band capable wireless clients to connect to the less crowded 5GHz network, and leave the 2.4GHz network available for those clients who support 2.4GHz only; thus, Wi-Fi performance can be improved for all clients.

How to use Band Steering?

To use band steering, it is required that 5GHz band have an identical SSID as 2.4GHz band, also Security settings have to be the same.

1. Go to Wireless LAN (5GHz) >> General Setup, enable 5GHz WLAN, and use the same SSID as 2.4GHz network.

2. Go to Wireless LAN (5GHz) >> Security Settings, use the same security method and pass phrase as 2.4GHz network.

3. Go to Wireless LAN (2.4GHz) >> Band Steering page to enable Band Steering and set Check Time. Check Time is the time VigorAP should wait before allowing a new client to join 2.4GHz network.

With the above configuration, when a wireless client connects to VigorAP, VigorAP will block 2.4GHz connection for 15 seconds, thus encourage it to try connecting to 5GHz network first. After 15 seconds, if the client did not join the 5GHz network, it will be able to connect to the 2.4G network.
