[Vigor3900] How to use High Availability in Hot-Standby mode?

Support Model : Vigor3900Vigor2960

This document introduces how to set up HA in Hot-Standby mode and here is the scenario: LAN1 and LAN2 have Internet Access through the Master device. When Master detects LAN or WAN fails, both LAN1 and LAN2 will have Internet Access through the Backup device.

Before configuring High Availability, we need to setup LAN profiles and the VLAN ID configurations on each router by the following rules:

  • The LAN profile name and VLAN ID of corresponding LAN between different routers must be the SAME.

  • Routers MUST own the DIFFERENT IP addresses on the HA Management LAN.

  • Router MUST own the SAME IP address on the non-HA Management LAN.

In this scenario, we take LAN1 as the HA Management LAN, so the IP addresses of each router on LAN1 should be different. And the IP addresses on the other non-HA Management LAN should be the same. So, the IP addresses setting will be:

Vigor3900_A: LAN1 (HA-LAN) - 192.168.10.1, LAN2 - 192.168.20.254

Vigor3900_B: LAN1 (HA-LAN) - 192.168.10.2, LAN2 - 192.168.20.254

Vigor3900_A - Master Setup

1. Go to Applications >> High Availability >> Hot-Standby Profile Setup page,

  1. Select lan1 for HA LAN Profile.
  2. Input Priority ID as 1 which is the highest priority.
  3. Input Virtual IP 192.168.10.254 for Gateway. (Virtual IP should be an IP in lan1 network)
  4. Input Group ID 1 (The other Vigor3900 should have same Group ID), then click Apply.

2. Go to Applications >> High Availability >> High Availability Global Setup page and

  1. Check to Enable High Availability
  2. Select Hot-Standby as the Redundant Method
  3. Input Authentication Key (The other Vigor3900 should have same Authentication Key, otherwise the config synchronization will fail.)
  4. Select Immediate as the Advance Preemption Mode
  5. Select Enable for WAN Connection Status Detection
  6. Select At Least One Up for LAN Port Status Detection

Vigor3900_B - Slave Setup

3. Go to LAN >> General Setup >> lan1 profile (the HA-LAN profile) to change the IP Address first, the LAN IP should be different from Vigor3900_A (Master).

Note: Only set the Master and Slave routers to different IP addresses on the LAN of management interface, the IP addresses of the rest of the LANs should be set to the same on both routers. Here is the example, which takes LAN1 as management interface:

  Subnet Master Router Slave Router

LAN3 192.168.3.0 192.168.3.254 192.168.3.254

192.168.x.254

192.168.x.254

4. Go to Applications >> High Availability >> Hot-Standby Profile Setup page, and

  1. Select lan1 for HA LAN Profile
  2. Input Priority ID as 2 since we already have the other Vigor3900 configuring with Priority ID 1
  3. Input Virtual IP 192.168.10.254 for Gateway (Virtual IP should be the same as the Virtual IP set up on the other Vigor3900.)
  4. Input Group ID 1 (should be same as the Group ID on the other Vigor3900) then click Apply.

5. Go to Applications >> High Availability >> High Availability Global Setup page and

  1. Check to Enable High Availability
  2. Select Hot-Standby as the Redundant Method
  3. Input Authentication Key (The Authentication Key should be the same as the other Vigor3900, otherwise the config synchronization will fail.)
  4. Select Immediate as the Advance Preemption Mode
  5. Select Disable for WAN Connection Status Detection (Because in Hot-Standby mode, Master and Slave router share the same Internet connection, so this is to ensure Slave device will keep Inter-LAN working when WAN connection is really failed.)
  6. Select Disable for LAN Port Status Detection

6. After completing above configurations, we can connect the LAN of both Vigor3900, then configuration synchronization will start. Slave will backup and restore the whole Master configurations except for LAN IP, HA configurations, Administrator Password, and Router Name. Please do not connect the WAN on the Vigor3900 Slave at the moment.

7. After config synchronized, Slave will do a restart. We can check HA Status via Applications >> High Availability >> HA Status page.

By clicking Detail button, we can see more device information.

8. When Master meets WAN or LAN Fail Event, or be powered off, the Vigor3900 with Priority ID 2 will become Master.

9. When upgrading the firmware of the Master Vigor3900, Backup router will upgrade to the same firmware version automatically. The process is:

  1. Master reboots for applying new firmware.
  2. Master is up and exchange HA information with the backup router.
  3. Backup router finds firmware version is not the same.
  4. Backup router will download the firmware from Master router, and then upgrade itself automatically

Send the Notification to Network Administrator

We can set Vigor Router to notify the network administrator by sending email or SMS when the High Availability related events occur, such as:

1. Failover Occurred: the WAN of the primary router goes down and the secondary router takes over,

2. Configuration Sync Fail: the configuration sync between primary and secondary router fails,

3. Router Unstable: one of the routers becomes unstable.

Please refer to these application notes, and choose "High Availability" when setting the Notification Object:
